How to prevent hair dye from fading?

My original hair color is that very pale, almost white, Nordic blonde. I died my hair black with permenant dye and it faded until my hair turned this strange greenish gray color. This happened a few months ago, and now my hair is healthy enough to dye it again. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on how to keep the hair dye from fading.

Also, if anyone has any tips on keeping hair healthy after dying it that would be much appreciated.

Don't wash your hair as often. I know its kinda gross but you can still take a shower every day, just don't wash it. Try to go 2-3 days before you wash it. Only shampoo it once when you're washing it, not twice. Buy shampoos and conditioners for color treated hair. Brushing and heat styling also make hair fade so try to cut down on these. You can also try semi-permanent treatments in between your permanent color treatments to keep the color fresh. Good luck!

Different dyes depending actually leave your hair in better shape than it was to begin with..... I use Revlon and it works great, theres no peroxide, and that makes it easy on your hair.. if you use the conditioner-sealer and not wash your hair for 3days then reapply the conditioner every time you wash your hair for a week it should stay on... I hope this helps you.... Good Luck

When you have very light hair as Nordic Blonde %26amp; color-dye to a darker it is so very hard to make the color transition the first time. You hair shaft is stripped of protein, %26amp; chemicals. It is now time you did it again %26amp; here's what I do in my shop when going or changing someone from light back to dark.

1-Make sure hair is shampoo'ed %26amp; damp dry. (wrap in towel %26amp; leave wrapped up 10-15 minutes for best guess.

2-Do make sure you have purchased a permanent hair color-not semi permanent-not loving care. And this time don't use black but the warmest darkest brown next to black,or the darkest brunette color available.

3-Section hair off in sections (will be 4 or 5 sections, according to the the hair being long %26amp; thick (5 sections) or short to med long (4sections) get you 4-5 hair clips and..

4-part %26amp; clip the sections off %26amp; start applying color at middle in the back %26amp; apply color from crown to nape of neck, comb it through, rub in till its saturated %26amp; pin this section up, next go to sides %26amp; top %26amp; apply, rub in %26amp; saturate well. Now unclip the 1st section %26amp; comb thru all the color all over the head, if you have more color %26amp; it looks as if it isn't soaked enough with color, apply rest of color. If hair is thick-BUY 2 bottles / applications of color-just in case. Most permanent color is 20-30 minutes-so leave on 30 minutes regardless. When time is up rinse out as much as possible %26amp; then shampoo as many times as needed until suds are white, will be 3-5 shampoo's.Use cool to warm water-not on the hot side !!!

5-Tips to help when using a darker color, always use a shampoo for color treated hair-not as harsh as other regular shampoo's. Use coolest water to shampoo %26amp; condition because the heat won't strip the color as fast.

6-One of best over the counter conditioner's for color treated hair to stay healthy is Clairol's Intensive Blends Herbal Essences w/vitamins %26amp; for dry/damanged hair (is a white bottle, drk green lid). Leave it on 10 minutes %26amp; rinse. Another is a product from the beauty supply %26amp; can also get at Sally's Beauty Supply, brand is Wella, %26amp; is a white tube of Kolestral,is concentrated %26amp; it also relieves itchy scalp from color %26amp; replensishes moisture starved dry damaged hair. Our hair doesn't have to be split to be damaged-it can be too dry from blow drying, using alcohol based hair sprays...or naturally course %26amp; thick like my hair. I never use hair sprays nor gels, just shampoo %26amp; conditioner, its always very shiny, smells fresh %26amp; clean-this is what makes hair (even color or bleached) healthy.

Good Luck w/ getting back darker

You are going to have an awful lot of build up on your ends if you do the ends every time you color. First time, it fades the most, second time a little less, each time though it does add build up. You can feel it in your hair and your hair becomes less and less silky, and more and more chemically dry.

To prevent this, I don't reccommend wetting your hair before coloring it unless the color you are using specifically says it can be done that way. There are some colors that simply WILL NOT take and actually will end up with darker and lighter (patches). Not attactive.

If you are going to do your hair yourself I do suggest you use a dark dark brown almost black, it will look black when you are done, and shouldn't fade to that greenish color, I would choose one that had a purple or blue or blue violet base to neutralize 'pulling any unwanted reds, greens, or golds'. I would also purchase a no lift permanent hair color and only mix with 20 volume creme developer in equal parts. After the first treatment of color retouch the 'roots only' every other time or so. This will prevent build up.

Maintenance:

Keep your hair trimmed. It will help maintain the overall color, as well as be easier to style and grow faster because there is less breakage so it seems to grow faster.

Limit your exposure to chlorine, and if you must go in chlorine or salt water, apply a product that blocks chlorine. Redken has a good one. I will see if I can find it online for you.

Limit heat. Dont dry hair till completely dry, and allow hair to dry somewhat before drying. Up to half way for straighter hair, more for a curlier look.

Limit use of gels and sprays, and when you do use them use alcohol free products. Alcohol fades and dries hair out.

Use sun protection for your hair when you are going to be in strong sunlight...ie":live in CA or going there on vacation, or going on vacation to some other sunny sunny spot or high heat area. Its called Redken UV Rescue. I use it, and I love it. I will find you a link.

Use products for color treated hair. They even have products that will keep your color. I will look these up too. They have a regular one, and also UV rescue and they have it for Brunette hair specifically.

Good luck.

It also helps to use lukewarm, or even better, cold water when you wash your hair.
