Hi im 18 weeks pregnant and would like to get my hair dyed or highlighted. My hair is dull due to pregnancy. Do you think its dangerous to dye hair in pregnancy, some studies say yes and others say no. Anyone else dyed hair while pregnant? Having my hair done always makes me feel good. What do others think? i called my doc.. they said that it is fine!! as long as it is ventalated.. had it done at 24 weeks!!

I've heard many different things, also. Personally, I would just err on the safe side and not do it. But if you do, make sure it's in a well ventilated area, so you're not breathing in the fumes too much.

I hear it is dangerous. However, you maybe able to look into some all natural methods that don't use harsh chemicals. Talk to a stylist.

So long as you are in a well ventilated area there isn't a problem, but don't be surprised if the color doesn't "take"

I wouldn't just because my hair grows so quick without the prenatal vits, now it is growing like crazy, it would be too hard for me to keep up with......

What to do and not to do in pregnancy is always confusing (eg is drinking alcohol safe in pregnancy) If I were you I'd err on the safe side and not dye my hair. I'm sure their are natural hair dye products, but I'm not entirely sure. Good luck with the hair and the pregnancy anyway :)

i got my hair done twice with my first pregnancy , and i just found out I'm pregnant again, and I'm going to get my hair done to celebrate. i ask my doc, and ask the hair stylist just in case, and they said it was fine. my hair stylist even said she work while pregnant, i dont know about that, but if she was around that for nine months and everything was fine, then i dont see why not, go for it

Yes it is fine.

It might take to your hair a bit differently becuase of the changes that happen when you are pregnant but speak to your hairdresser.

I checked with my midwife first and she said it will be fine as long as im in a well ventilated room (as a salon would be). I had it done and my 7 month old baby boy is fine. Just think about it, make up, shampoo, perfume etc all contain chemicals that are absorbed into the skin. You could drive yourself crazy thinking about all this stuff. Check with your doc to put your mind at rest but i personally think its fine.

im sure theres something about the chemicals and what not, like how pregnant women are not recommended to paint the nursery, I have never gotten my hair dyed but I dont think it would be that harmful. Let your hairdresser know and perhaps while waiting for the dye to set in instead of sitting in the fumes go outside for a bit. I think the more damage can be done earlier to the fetus, at 18 weeks your almost halfway done. If it makes you feel good and you take a little extra precautions i wouldnt see the harm in it.

Well it can introduce chemicals into the body. I don't think it is really dangerous unless you do it all the time. Personally my hair is pretty crappy looking and I went and got a new hairstyle. I colored my hair right before I found out I was preg and the color faded pretty fast. That is why I don't color or highlight my hair, because my hair is not holding anything well these days. I would NOT risk it. why take the chance? Its your baby and you wanna risk it cause of your hair??? come on do the right thing and give this little person the best chances it can have. You can suffer with mildly less than attractive hair for a little while.

It is not dangerous, my mother is a cosmetologist and worked through both pregnancies and that was back when hair color was even stronger. I also have a 3 year old daughter and when I was pregnant I had my hair colored and she is above average in intelligence. Just go to a professional and don't huff the dye or anything you and the baby will be just fine.

Why not henna your hair ? It will add shine and condition as well as a subtle colour.You will be able to dye over it after your baby is born.

i spoke to my hairdresser as i too am thinking on getting my hair done... i look yuck and just want to feel lovely again.

She told me that there have been nothing lately to suggest dying to be a problem, yet streaking is an option most mums to be go for as less makes contact and all that yadda yadda. speaking with the midwife, she cant condone it but cant agree with it either. i think its a case of research and personal choice, whatever you want to do dont feel pressured in to it or out of it. A happy mummy helps as well as a mummy wrapped in cotton wool.

I dyed my hair at 12 weeks and my son is fine so I wouldn't worrry at all just make sure if your doing it yourself you are in a well ventelated area and if you feel sick or dizzy to stop right away Back in the old days hair dye was made different then it is made now so thats why they say not to dye your hair when pregnant but now they use less chemicals so there is no problems hope this help and I don't worry just do it!!

I never stopped dying my hair even when I was prenant.(did it myself) Hubby said I should not have done it. (daughter came out with red hair) He's blond i'm naturally brunette.never mind the fact that i have red in my hair naturally.But it did not have any effect on her at all really. Good luck !!

colouring your hair will not harm your baby in anyway but i probably wouldnt get it done as sometimes the changes in your hormones while you are pregnant can cause the dye not to take as well as when you are not pregnant

as am a hairdresser its really up 2 u!but we have done loads of customers that r pregnant my friend in work is pregnant at the minute and she got her hair bleached but the colour didnt take like it normally does on her hair so we think its cos she is pregnant 2!

My friend has just recently had a baby. Her hairdresser advised that dying your hair is not harmful to the baby. However due to the increased hormones in your body during pregnancy, if you have particularly fine hair, it may be prone to drying out and damaging quicker if you dye it. The hormones affect the condition of your hair, but it shouldn't have any affect on the baby.

My friend dyed her hair several times during pregnancy as it cheered her up too, and she has now got a gorgeous baby so I guess it did her no harm!

I'm not sure that I would. Apart from the fact that our skin absorbs a certain amount of the chemical. I have heard that our hair doesn't behave as we expect it to when dyed or permed during pregnancy, in that it won't necessarily come out the shade that we want. In fact, the dying will not help the condition of your hair and will actually probably make it drier.

Though, actually, at 18 weeks pregnant you are in the second tri-mester, and that is when our hair and skin start to look really good. I would give it a chance to see how it goes. I think you will start to bloom. How about treating yourself to a facial or a pedicure and foot massage instead, or have a pampering treatment.

If you are thinking of coloring your hair while you are pregnant, look into Henna. This is an all natural chemical free way of coloring your hair. It can be done at home. You can find it at natural food stores like Whole Foods.

And to all you mentioning ventilation, the chemicals in the hair dye also leach into your body via your scalp. This is also why they suggest that pregnant women think about waiting on coloring their hair, especially in the first trimester when the fetus is at its most vunerable.
