Dye black hair brown?

I have brownish-black hair, and i want it to be a medium/dark reddish-brown. I've tried revlon colorsilk and garnier hair color, but both didn't really work or get my hair the color it's supposed to be on the color guide on the box. i want to avoid salons and bleaching. anyone know of a box hair dye that can get my hair noticably lighter?

i tried a home highlighting kit once and it did work, so i know i should be able to do this at home.

First of all, bottle dying doesnt destroy your hair if you do it right. I use the L'oreal Coleur Experte 2-in-1 kit, that has hair color and highlights in one box. Its easy to use, and gives great results. If you dont want the highlights, just use the color, then apply the bleach evenly over your hair for just a few minutes to lighten the color to the shade you want. The conditioner that comes with it, works great at keeping your hair soft and shiny without drying it out like other brand dyes. Ive been using it for 5 years now to increase the red color in my hair, and I was born with dark brown almost black hair. I go back and forth between 3.5 chocolate mousse and 5.5 cinnamon stick. both give great red tones to my hair. (and yes my hair is still healthy....my hairdresser says so) ;) good luck!

Why do you want to avoid salons?

There is no way to lighten your hair other than bleaching it. Salons will do it safely and it will kill your hair less. Stop, I repeat, STOP bottle dying it. You are destroying your hair. Just go to a salon and describe to them what you want; they know what they are doing. You, however, don't.

The colors you buy at walmart, target, drugstores, ect. Have a limit as to how light they can go where as the ones in the salons dont because most who dye there hair at home dont no a whole lot about coloring. Try going a shade lighter but you may need to take baby steps with it like go one shade lighter wait two weeks and go 2 ect. But go with an ammonia free dye because its much better for your hair espacially since you will need to dye it more than once.

You cannot dye your hair a lighter color. You have to bleach it.

Imagine you had a black sweater. Could you dye it white?

I think not!

DO NOT dot it at home...trust me! Please! You will end up spending a fortune to get it "fixed" in a salon after you mess it up at home dying it from a bottle! My hairstylist told me that its okay (but not great) to go darker at home, but NEVER, EVER okay to go lighter at home! You are going to be a carrot top if you do it.....

SOMETIMES THE SHORTEST LEAST EXPENSIVE ROUTE IS THE LONGEST MOST EXPENSIVE EXPERIMENT.

LET A PROFESSIONAL DO IT FOR YOU.

if you dye it too much over and over again your hair will not have good results and it will start to fall out. just go to a salon where they have training and it won't cost as much as you are probably thinking. And why don't you want to be a dark haired beauty, anyway?!?!?!?!?!
