Will blonde dye make my red hair light brown?

I have redish/brown(mostly red) hair that I want to dye light brown. I usually go to a salon to get my hair done but I'm hoping to save money by doing it myself. I already tried using a regualr brown hair dye but it didnt do anything to my hair. If I use a blonde hair dye will that just make my hair a lighter brown instead of actually blonde?

red is a difficult color to cover. the pigment is very strong. you will need to use an ash shade. remember that 20.volume peroxide lifts 1-2 shades. so be careful how long you leave it on as your red pigment will go orange. are you really sure you want to change all your color?? why not try lo-lights in an ash tone. once you start coloring your hair you have to keep up with it.
