DIY Hair Dye?

What are some good brands of hair dye that aren't too harsh on hair? I got my hair dyed professionally for $75 but I wasn't satisfied. It faded back to my normal hair color in less than a month. My hair is normally a dull medium red color and I want it to be a darker, richer auburn color.

you could use herbal essences, theyre stuff is prtty good, what ever you do dont pick a really dark color cuz the die is ALWAYS darker than it is on the box!

herbal essences wont dry your hair out as much as the others!!!

temporary dyes are always the best cause they don't damage your hair, but they're a pain in the *** because you have to re dye it like everyweek cause it fades but they're pretty cheap like 5 dollars a box depending on what brand.

You need to just get it professionally done. Even dyes at the beauty supply store are going to fade. You ONLY paid 75 for your dye job?? That's probably why. I have always had to pay 100+ for a good dye job.

I color my hair to be rich auburn, and I've used pretty much every DIY brand out there, and never had a problem. I really like Herbal Essences and Garnier myself, but it depends on the exact shade you're going for, as each brand varies slightly. Whatever you do, just make sure to CONDITION your hair (every DIY color kit comes with after-color conditioner in it) to keep it healthy. Red fades faster than any other color, and unfortunately, it will fade with almost any brand you choose - it's just a fact of red hair color. So go with a permanent dye, not semi-permanent as another user suggested. John Freida makes a great color glaze that's only about $10 at drugstores, and it helps boost the color when it starts fading, and blends the roots so you can go longer between dye jobs. It definitely makes a difference! Just make sure to keep your hair conditioned (I like Aussie 3-Minute Miracle) or the color will fade even more quickly.
